What is Ribs, Rods and Rock n' Roll?
A community wide event, that started as a way to celebrate the end of harvest by the forefathers of the community. Every year after the completion of harvest the community would celebrate by barbequing ribs over hand dug pits below the bluff along the banks of the Vermillion river. The feast was cooked using corn cobs. The entire Vermillion community was welcome.
The Modern day event had a KCBS sponsored BBQ cookoff, with ~30 teams from across the Midwest, there are also many local teams that carry on the BBQ tradition . 2024 brought a change to the BBQ competition which included a Wing War featuring local resturants on Friday night and a Backyard BBQ Rib cookoff event. The event features many activities for the entire community including a Kids activity area, Cornhole tourney, 5K USMC Color run, a show and shine car show (2019 we over200 cars), many vendors including old fashion root beer, cotton candy and of course RIBS!! Last but not least music and dancing,
We have over 50 local and Corp. businesses that contribute to the even t each year. Without all of their support the event would not exist. Please help us thank them by visiting their establishments.
The event is held on Friday night and all day Saturday, the first weekend after Labor Day.
